Review of Stovax Stockton 7 Inset Convector stove

3 years on with the Stockton 7 inset.

I have had this stove for three years now. Initially I was unsure if this stove performed well, as I found the heat a little low, and the airwash wasn't great. What I am now saying is that this stove can perform superbly. To get superb heat this stove needs a bit of skill from the owner. I used to dampen down the airwash too quickley causing it to smother. I now give each filling of wood a generous amount of airflow to begin with for a longer time- till the flames are fierce, then gradually tap down the airwash. If the flames appear to be struggling, tap the airwash open slightly, so that there is always a moving rythmical flame. One point to note: the kindling will burn fast, and once it has burned, the logs will not catch so easilly, so keep the airflow generous for 30 mins or so. I don't close the airwash any more than halfway with dry wood. Slightly damp wood needs more airflow, but I can turn airwash to 3/4 open after a good burn. The airwash now performs better, and can help clean the glass if used well, despite being slightly fiddly.

Additionally, I used to burn only a small amount of fuel at a time, but more recently I burn it the whole afternoon, and the heat is 'powerful'! My living room door is my thermostat- open if too warm, closed if not long lit, and the heat rises upstairs to the bedrooms- taking away the chill at least!

Regarding the glass, I have ensured that the screws holding the glass in are not too tight to allow the glass to expand and contract. So far I've had no broken or crazed glass, and hopefully won't in future. The bricks can crack over time an can need replacing. The baffle plates still appear to be in good condition, as does the whole stove.

Its a great stove to consider buying, despite being slightly fiddly, and performs well with an experienced owner. Well built too!

Stove expert replied: Please do not use damp wood on your stove as this can lead to problems in the flue system, there should be a moisture content of 20% or less.
