Review of Stovax Stockton 5 stove

So far so good

David Parker 6 years ago

We had two of these stoves fitted in our downstairs living rooms at the beginning of November 2016. Having used them extensively over the winter that followed it seems appropriate to review them now, 6 months later.

We have no complaints really.

1. They draw really well (perhaps thanks to our old Victorian house with the usual gaps in floorboards etc).

2. When it was very cold and we were around all day by starting a fire earlier in the day we effectively warmed the entire house by evening (using just one of the two stoves).

3. On an average evening burn it would easily warm our living room and it absolutely transformed Christmas.

4. Take time to get to know your Stockton. While all Stockton 5''s may be more or less the same, every home they are installed in will be different and so each Stove will behave slightly differently depending on context. Once you understand what is right for your home, you''ll enjoy using your stove much more. For example, I came to find a faster, hotter burn for an initial hour, followed by a slower burn with a mix of birch and oak was best for us. For others it will be different.

5. We have multi fuel versions but we only burn wood. The addition of the ash pan makes cleaning up easier.

6. There was some fogging of the glass at times, but nothing major. The following morning some dampened newspaper dipped in fine ash and rubbed across the inside of the door window cleared it perfectly.

No real negatives I can think of. A minor quibble might be the fact the door handle gets very hot. Other stoves sometimes incorporate non conductive materials in their handle designs. Remember your welder''s gloves with this one. You''ll need them. Overall, a great stove and one I would recommend.

Stove expert replied: If you are only planning on burning wood you may find that a wood conversion kit would improve the performance, downside is you will need to remove the ash using a fireside tool.
