Review of Stovax Riva 40 multi fuel

Bad ash removeal

Keen 12 years ago

Bad ash removal lets down this product, also the soft paintwork. This is not an everyday fire because it is very difficult to remove the ash as the holes in the upper grate do not line up with the lower grate. I have to sweep the ash down the grate holes with a paintbrush at the same time as riddling the grate. The problem is a lot worse with mixed wood and smokeless coal due to a higher ash level. With just smokeless fuel it's not workable. Stovax ( technical ) said that's how it is.( No help there.)

I had splash marks on the paint work and tried to wipe it off with soapy water, that didn't work so I tried white spirt and it took the paint off.

On the plus side it makes a good fire, plenty of heat and control. Spares are pricey also.

Stove expert replied: It is not a good idea to burn wood AND smokeless fuel as it produces sulphuric acid which can eat away at your flue. Stove paint is fairly soft until it has cured by getting nice and hot. Seeing as white spirit is a common paint solvent it is probably not the best thing to clean a painted surface with. That said the ash removal sounds a little arduous. Perhaps consider a little shovel as well to save time?
