Review of Scan Andersen 4-5 stove
Multi Fuel - or Not?
I have had a Scan 4.5 Multi fuel stove installed in my Orkney home. I researched this thoroughly with Yorkshire stove suppliers before purchase and was led to understand it was multi fuel and well able to use coal as well as wood because wood is difficult to obtain in Orkney (very expensive too!)I also had fitted temperature gauge which is closely monitored to avoid over heating.Despite this the riddle has never worked (one winter's use), the grate has cracked and tiny splinter looking defects are all over the glass. Can someone tell me for sure whether or not this stove is meant to burn solid fuel as well as wood? All the Scan literature talks about wood, the suppliers say solid fuel - coal - is fine but I am not able to get a definite answer? Thank you.
Stove expert replied: Having looked in the manual page 34 it states wood as the fuel type for this model, no mention of smokeless fuels as being suitable.

We have a Scan 4.5 fitted..Although the instructions only mention wood as fuel we find if the stove is up to temperature and a small amount of smokeless coal fuel is added this will maintain an even output temperature and if restocked will allow an overnight burn. We also have a Franco Belge Monfort but we wouldn't use ordinary coal on any of our stoves due to excessive heat generated by coal....Hope this helps
