Review of Morso Panther stove

Excellent and reliable woodstove

Bob Ridge 12 years ago

I have a convector model (2140) now in use for 15 years. It is the older type (no secondary burn). Used continuously (24h) December to March. No problems except that the upper baffle warped after about 13 years (even though never over-fired) and was easily replaced. On the second set of bricks, replaced at the same time as the baffle. The glass is original and no cracks. I replace the door sealing rope every second year because the doors get much use.

I have used woodstoves for 40 years and this is by far the best. Have only used well-seasoned hardwood such as elm, oak, cherry, ginkgo. I prepare all the wood myself and store it 1-2 years before use. Lighting from cold I crack the door slightly and open the rotary griddle and the air adjustors. Once it gets going I close the griddle, close the doors tight and turn in the air adjustors. Slow-burning works very well; I am not sure why others have had problems unless it is the secondary burn type that is more difficult to control.

The rotary griddle is in perfect condition after all this time and works well, but I don't use it laboriously to empty all the ash, only to clear the ash bed for a little air on rejuvenating the fire in the morning. When the ash bed is too high I use a small shovel to remove some of the ash. A pan with water on top helps humidify the air. The stove is not really useful for cooking or boiling water, but it will keep things warm/hot. Once going it keeps the living room (50 sq m) quite warm and warm air filters through to other rooms.

Have just bought a country house and I intend to put in a Morso stove, probably a 2B classic.

I strongly recommend the Morso Panther 2140, though I have no experience with the newer, secondary burn model.

Stove expert replied: what a great, informative, review from a stove owner who has obviously really knows their stove. Fantastic that only the baffle has gone after 13 years.... : )
