Review of Morso 04 stove

Morso 04 Jan 2010

Just got the Morso 04 Jan 2010. Never had a stove before. House is 20 year old, has a chimney but I had a gas effect fire in it, which apart from decoration served no purpose in adding additional heat. Got a professional in to knock out existing fireplace to see what we had to work with and surprisingly there was enough room to fit the stove and reuse the existing fireplace materials eg wood surround and marble infill, be it the marble was cut bigger to accomodate the larger fireplace opening. (not all installers would do this, prefer to knock out, scrap and replace with new, all adding to my expense)

Fire in and operational while the snow was around. Lights real easy, only used logs. Would say, getting a supply of genuine seasoned hard wood logs is a bit of a gamble out there. Yes many people do supply but just how dry are they?, if they don't have a low moisture content then they will soot up your glass and spoil the experience. I tried Kiln dried logs as well. Perfect, light immediatly, no smoking or sooting up the glass and loads of dancing flames and heat output, the reason you bought stove, right. And it does knock out a fair bit of heat. 5 bed house lounge / dinner 12' x 30' doors open to the hall and the rest of the house and the gas central heating dosent click in, so you have to nudge it up a bit to warm up cooler spots like bedrooms, but its not here to heat the whole house, this is just an example of the output. But watch your log supplier. I'm still experimenting and looking for a reasonable priced supply of kiln dried as they are more expensive than the local "seasoned logs", but they do what it says on the tin. For seasond logs you need a trusted and honest source where air drying can be upto 4 years and certainly 2 years as a min. Not many out there can operate such and investment period. I'm also looking at compressed sawdust logs at an alternative, and cheaper. In Morso's own paperwork supplied with the stove, it cites tests were completed using materials with a moisture content of >4% in attaining the efficiency figures. You can only achieve this level of moisture content in a kiln or sawdust compressed log, there lies a clue. Good stove, compact and powerful. Overnight burn is rated low by me, only because I have not tried it, but its so quick to light I don't need that feature.
