Review of Morso 04 stove

Wer Wood??

Kaylee 11 years ago

A Morso 4 stove was purchased for my Wine Estate's tasting room in November 2010. Living in Cape Town - South Africa, our winters are not very cold but the fire is used steadily in winter to keep us warm and toasty. One and a half winters in our Baffle has not only dropped so low that you can hardly place wood in the fireplace but it has also broken into pieces. After calling the Morso people in Cape Town, I was first told I was "burning the fire too hot" - now I usually start the fire, let it burn and then keep it simmering for a few hours at a time to just make sure we have a constant medium heat in our tasting room. After I insisted someone came out to inspect the fire place he said to me that I was burning "wet wood" - which I was not and that wood had to be at least 2 years old (after being cut) to be burnt in this fireplace - he then proceeded to tell me there is only one person in Cape Town that sells wood that can be used in a Morso fireplace (sales gimmick??). The wood we use has been cut 7 years ago and is dry as a bone. I feel these are feeble excuses and even if we were burning wet wood - could it do this damage? Is this a viable reason for the baffle to break into pieces?

Stove expert replied: Wet wood can cause problems when used in any stove, you may not be aware that the stove flue is over-drawing unless you are not able to close the stove down to a slumbering mode. These are consumable items and will require replacing and it may be worth getting a thicker one fabricated if this happens again.
