Review of Mendip Woodland Stove and Convector stove

very disappointing for an expensive stove

Nigel Clarke 3 years ago

Despite following the instructions from the fitter and from the user manual it is impossible to add fuel without smoke bellowing out and stinking out the conservatory. Have to open windows to let the smell out and the heat goes too. Have not noticed this problem with other stoves. Would have our money back if this was possible.

Stove expert replied: This is 99% likely to be due to the chimney rather than the stove. There are a couple of things that could be happening here. Modern stoves are getting more and more efficient - that also means they tend to be more heavily baffled - so they are less forgiving if your chimney does not draw well. Often a chimney for a conservatory stove will either be quite short, or it may have several bends in it to take it back to the main house and then up. It can also be due to not enough air coming into the room - as you open the door of a stove air needs to rush up the chimney or it will smoke into the room. You can test whether this is the case by opening a window when you try to refuel. The solution to the chimney, if that is the problem (which is very likely), is often simply to make it higher. I am sure that Mendip stoves would like to help guide you in how you might make the chimney work better - I can put you in touch with them if you like?
