Review of Jotul F 220 stove

Worth considering

Our stove is heating a tall log cabin with a loft together with a electric heater. This cabin is kept cold when not in use and the stove works well for heating the cold cabin quickly, itís almost to efficient once itís warm. This is probably due to the flue, its quite tall and the stove burns the logs quite quickly even on its lowest setting - this is why we have a electric heater to keep the cabin warm in the morning hours when the fire has died down.

The airwash is excellent on this model but our model is the old one without cleanburn. The handle design is a bit odd, a loose handle to open the hatch and to adjust draft. At least I seem to be misplacing it all the time :).

The stove would probably work much better with some good quality wood but we burn low grade pine as that's what we have. Inside the stove has a round grate which can be opened and closed from outside and leads to a ash pan in the bottom, it tends to be a bit sticky and noisy at least if you have people sleeping around you. One thing with this model that I found is that it tends to let smoke in when you open the hatch, even with good draft in the chimney and opening the hatch slowly. On the positive side, for a stove this size it accepts quite a load of wood and the shape of the firebox is cubical, nothing is restricting the space so you can load it to the top with full length logs. Also the build quality has been excellent, in the 10 years we have had it, not even a door gasket has needed replacing. It is not perhaps the best choice for continuous heating, at least with inferior wood but otherwise a pretty good choice.

Overall Iím quite happy with it and would recommend it to anybody who would like a stove with a contemporary design.

Stove expert replied: Other wood may well improve the stoves performance but overall this is a reasonable review.
