Review of Hunter Herald 14 stove

Cheap and Nasty

Sam Buckee 11 years ago

Having moved to a house with a Herald installed, we were overwhelmed by just how smoky the stove was when using the air wash or opening the doors to refuel. An approved contractor was appointed to install a flue liner to the stove as initial investigations revealed that the previous owner had only inserted the stove flue into the 9 inch glazed chimney liners. A smoke pellet test proved that the 9 Meters of new flue would draw smoke, problem solved ...... No not a bit. As soon as a fire is lit the heat generated rushes up the angled throat plate and shoots out into the room if the doors are open. This is a major design fault on Hunters part, and looking at the new design of the throat plates fitted to the new non CE Heralds seems to back this theory up. I am going to remove the convoluted baffle system that is above the angled plate and replace the plate with one of the new "shallower angle" design to see if it helps to alleviate the problem.

In addition to these problems, the stove also exhibits all the other flaws mentioned in previous reviews.

Having owned a Morso for twelve trouble free years, I would strongly recommend Morso or any other brand for that matter over anything made by Hunter.
