Review of Firefox 8 stove

Burning Baffle Plates

BJ J 11 years ago

Stove Wizard we need your help. We installed our Firefox 8 in October 2008 in the front room of our 3 bed semi. We use it as our main source of heat and burn from end Oct - April, may be longer or shorter depending on the weather. We burn sometimes just in the evenings during the week and sometimes from 9.00am to 10.00 pm. on very cold weekend days. We don't have a wood burning kit and get through at least 5 1/2 cubic meters of seasoned softwood logs plus a good quantity of construction wood such as old decking. I use a moisture meter to make sure the wood is dry.

Stove expert replied: The amount of wood required will depend on quality and on what setting the stove is working. If the baffle plates are failing quickly it may be that the stove is operating on its maximum for the majority of the time and although a wood stove needs to work hard if left on maximum for pro-longed periods can lead to component failure. This can be exacerbated if the flue draw changes in various weather conditions, if you have noticed a difference in controllability I would recommend getting the flue checked to see if a damper or stabilizer is required. It sounds like you could probably actually do with the next size up, so a Firefox 12.
