Having paid a lot of money for a professional Hetas approved installation my fire is still not right. I have had two visits from Hetas themselves as the first visit it was found the installation was not compliant. The second has taken place just a few minutes ago and states compliant.
The problem is that the back brick keeps cracking. I am now on my fourth and the fire was installed 12 months ago though it was only lit last week for the first time and the brick has cracked. I am burning good quality wood and following all the rules. The company who installed it are trying to see I am burning the wrong wood or rubbish and that the fire is too hot???? I had paid for the chamber to be prepared i.e. the chimney breast etc. though during the 10-12 visits from the company they have ruined all the plaster and I will have to have it re-done again. The owner of the company has been out with Hetas just now and has said he will provide a new brick and a thermometer would be a good idea to measure the right amount of heat - I am willing to give this ago though still a little confused about it. He also said he will speak with Percy Doughty the manufacturer. There was a comment made on here about there being problems with the back brick in 2010 - is this still a known problem. any help or advice would be appreciated. Delia CaseyStove expert replied: The fire bricks can crack which should not cause any problem providing it is protecting the metal of the stove. A stove thermometer is always a good idea to check that the user is burning at the optimum temperature.
