Review of Firefox 5 stove

Clean Burn gem

Mike Thompson 14 years ago

Mine is the Firefox 5 CB (Clean Burn) DEFRA Approved to burn wood in Smokeless zones. It has a rear tertiary air chamber covered by a rear heat shield. It therefore has no rear flue only a top flue.I was unaware of this limitation ,as was the shop assistant, until I got it home. The none-DEFRA Firefox 5 does have a rear flue,so beware.\nAfter the initial very smelly paint curing period of 5 burns,it runs like a dream. The key being DRY paper, kindling and seasoned HARD WOOD logs.Pine is a waste of time.\nUpon lighting it roars like a furnace providing the rear throat is clear of ash and within 10 minutes is away. The ability to open or close the grate with ease is very useful.Have it closed for wood to burn on bed of ash or open for smokeless fuel to gain air from below.\nThe glass remains clear with the primary air supply open at least halfway the view of dancing flames tremendous as is the heat.\nSo pleased I did not buy a Morso or steel box Clearview at over twice the price of this bargain gem.\nAlso pleased I did not put in a chimney liner as existing 100 year old end terraced flue works a treat even in a snow blizzard.\nTwo thermalite blocks 87p each make an excellent insulated closure plate \n\n

Stove expert replied: Not sure about closure plate being used. Good little stove though, good point about Defra model only having top flue outlet. Versatile stove and good price.
