Great fire- unclear instructions

We bought this burner a few months ago and were complete beginners. The fire itself is great, looks effective and can hold large amounts of coal or wood. We had a little trouble with the wheels originally and the instructions weren't very clear, when looking at which wheels to have open to get optimum heat output. We have settled on all 3 open to start it up and once hot and burning well we close the bottom 2, leaving the top wheel open slightly, this seems to give off the best heat but we are still experimenting.
