Review of Esse 500 stove

This was our first stove and initially we loved it. It looked great and was easy to light and control. We found wood caused a lot of soot/tar to form on the window so we used mainly solid fuel. (Since we were beginners I would accept that the wood may not have been well seasoned.) As time went by (over about 6 years)it become more difficult to control the air supply and after 10 years the back fell off. If you find this a rather dramatic statement I can back it up with photographs. Its construction resembles flat-pack furniture. The top and bottom clamp the front, back and sides. There are grooves in the top and bottom that the side pieces fit into. The stove had been assembled with the sides not securely anchored in these slots. We sought the advice of several stove suppliers to try to find a solution and they expressed astonishment at our experience. Had we known a little more about stoves we might have spotted the problem at an earlier stage. I am not implying that this is a common problem with the Esse stove, just our experience. \n\n
Stove expert replied: Very surprised by this experience, Esse is a well established manufacturer, it did take several years for the failure. Difficult to explain why, I have not heard of similar experiences.
