Review of Esse 100 stove

Dirty glass - what are we doing wrong?

Stephanie Piddington 9 years ago

We recently (May 2014) had an Esse 100 MF stove installed (cheaper now than later in the year!) We chose the Esse because of the good reviews on this site, we liked to big window and we wanted to buy British-made. We have only lit the stove 3 or 4 times so far, the first time with solid fuel (smokeless, although we do not live in a smokeless area), then with wood the last 2 or 3 times. Our logs are well-seasoned and dry. The problem is that each time we have lit the stove, following the instructions to the letter, within a few minutes the whole of the glass is completely dirty and the fire obscured. What are we doing wrong? Any tips?

Stove expert replied: Are you keeping the air wash open? Try lighting the fire and leaving the door ajar until some heat is in the firebox (5 - 10 mins). Was the flue lined, is the house well insulated and if so have you an air vent in the room?
