Review of Esse 100 stove
ESSE 100
We bought our little ESSE 100 after reading lots of information on the internet. We live in a smoke-free zone and were limited on what we could buy without having to have the stove converted.
Initially I was really pleased but now I'm fed up with having to take a hammer to the hinges that work their way free once a week, the top hinge pin will not go all the way into the hinge. The top deflector plate in the combustion chamber has badly distorted, this isn't because the stove has been fired too hot as I also have a temp gauge on the flue to help us prevent overheating from happening. Also the glass has become discoloured and I am finding it impossible to clean. Ours also ticks when heating up and cooling down but I've got used to the noise. I must have the most problematic ESSE going judging from the reviews on this site. On a more positive note, the heat output is wonderful as is the view of the flames when the glass is clear. Kiln dried logs throw out the best heat but we've also used anthracite. I agree that the handle for removing the ash pan is hopeless but when I empty ours the pan is usually cold anyway but I've used our stove gloves as a precaution. It'll be a shame when I don't need to use it in the summer months.Stove expert replied: Anthracite is one of the hottest fuels that you can use and it may be better to change to an alternative smokeless product, if you over riddle a stove it can shorten the life of the grate system, try to leave a small bed of ash to protect it and empty the ashpan straight away. Do not leave ash to build up in the pan as this can also shorten the grates life expectancy.
