Review of Coalbrookdale Severn stove

Coalbrookdale Severn - part of the family

Howard Davies 3 months ago

I bought this stove secondhand twenty four years ago, and it was six years old then. We bought it to heat our living room and power 8 radiators. We extended the house over ten years ago and installed a further six radiators and added an oil based central heating system, integrating the stove using a Dunsley neutraliser. The stove has been fantastic and operated brilliantly throughout. It cannot run all fourteen radiators on its own, but it does provide enough heat to adequately warm them, which is often enough in the autumn.

For the first fourteen years it was our only source of heating and we burned a mixture of wood and anthracite. I lit it in September and it went out in May. Nowadays I tend to only burn seasoned wood and it doesn''t get the use it did, but on a winter''s evening it is excellent. I don''t burn wood directly on the bars, but on a steel pan I made to fit the firebox that sits on top of the bars. It has holes drilled in the front to suck air up and past the glass, helping to keep it clean. I only empty the ash about once a month as it seems to burn to almost nothing this way.

Two years ago I noticed the boiler leaking slightly into the ashpan and became resigned to the fact that it would need replacing. I spoke to Rangemoors Limited and they contacted AGA who then fabricated me a completely new boiler for £600. I dismantled the stove, had the boiler replaced, and rebuilt the stove around it. This winter I took out the throat plate to sweep the chimney, only to find the throat plate came out in three parts. This part is now not available. However, I fabricated a replacement throat plate out of 6mm steel and it is now running again beautifully.

I know it can''t go on forever, but it I will do my best to keep it running sweetly and see how long it lasts. We are now at 30 years. Yes, the glass does go black if run at half throttle or lower, but a quick scrape with a Stanley knife blade and its all gone. This is a high quality product that is a central feature of our home. I will miss when it finally gives up the ghost.
