Review of Coalbrookdale Severn stove

NON-BOILER

ALAN 11 years ago

Bought a few years ago from Ebayworld when half way through a chapel renovation as a stop gap solution with the intention of going mad when finished and buying a new expensive one, BUT that isn't going to happen now. This is a heavy duty solid well built machine, designed before airwash was the thing to have, yes it smokes the glass, but that will easily dust off.

When installing its worth noting it has a 6" flue outlet and making a good seal with 150mm pipework is painful but worth it.

Lighting is always a first time job, it never needs a second go, we do have a new chimney and are a 1000 feet up in the hills of Wales and there is a good draw no matter the weather. It will stay in all night too with anthracite but wood doesn't last too long and really (I think) gets much too hot.

Glass has been a bit of a bind, got through a few of them, the single ash pan is very heavy and I have ordered the split one as the single version hurts the wrist, even without ash and is very wide for emptying.

Replacement will be a problem, as I hope it lasts for ever and as spares are still out there and newer machines have little charm.

Recent experience in a holiday let in Snowdonia with a new steel stove makes me love the Severn even more.
