Review of Clearview vision 500 stove

Disappointed

Dotti Tull 10 years ago

After last year's freezing winter, we installed a Vision 500 a few months ago in our lounge which is a huge room (approx. 4m by 5m) so we installed a Vision 500 which we've been using since October (we had a chimney liner fitted at the same time). This is our first experience with a woodburner and so far I must admit to being disappointed. Firstly because there is such a lot of mess, grey ash all over the hearth every time I load a log, and debris from logs all over the floor, but the main reason for my disappointment is that the stove takes ages to light, then struggles to reach a high temperature. The manual says it should reach 400 degrees within half an hour, well, we have never had it above 350 degrees, even when it's been on for 9 hours. Because of this, we are never able to slow the fire down (as it never gets hot enough). As a result we are getting through loads of logs, approx. 4 per hour. Having read all the glowing reviews about this stove, I assumed the problem must be the fuel we're using. The logs we burn are seasoned hardwood, bought locally from local farms and garden centres. However, even kiln dried wood is not solving the problem. I phoned Clearview and spoke to a woman in the showroom who was not very helpful or interested. She suggested the chimney might need insulation. Do you have any other suggestions?

Stove expert replied: I would suggest purchasing a moisture meter so that you can be sure the wood burnt is less than 20% moisture content. Was insulation put round the liner? Is there enough air in the room for combustion? Have you adequate clearance round the stove for the heat to radiate freely?

We recently installed a Vision 500 a few months ago and are experiencing the same problems as above. Any advice on the best way to use air wash and spin wheel would be very much appreciated.
