Review of Clearview 650 stove

Clearview 650

We bought our Clearview 650 stove 4 years ago to help heat a drafty old farmhouse. As a result we now only burn oil for hot water so 1 2,500 ltr oil tank lasts 18 months!\n\nI do very much sympathise with other reviewers who have had problems with this model and through a certain amount of finding out the hard way, there are some key things you need to know. The most important being that the door hinges, the main door handle and the ashpan handle are all on winding threads. It is possible (indeed essential) to get a perfect and reliable seal by spending a little time experimenting with how far to screw in or out, especially the door hinges. I have replaced the door seals once (very easy to do)and these hinge settings are particularly important.\n\nThe other tip is get a magnetic thermometer, once you have one you very quickly become adept at operating the levers and get to the superheated / super efficient operating temperature mode 500-600F (barely visible effermeral flames at the very top of the stove) which uses far less wood than cooler temps, once attained. This mode produces only 1 ashpan a week for us.\n\nOur stove runs absolutely 24/7 for 7 months a year and we love it, I reckon it uses just under a wheelbarrow of wood a day. We buy 3m long Oak off cuts from a saw mill (£150 for a large farm trailer load - we use 2.5 loads a year) and I chainsaw it into 12" slices. (a lot of manual work but saves a fortune compared to oil or buying pre-cut). Oak can actually burn too hot so we have to be careful. (The baffle can become mishapen if burning too hot).\n\nOnce you get the hang of it is easy to control very finely and the glass really does stay pristine and clear. I have recommended it twice to friends who are also as satisfied as we are with ours. \n\n

Stove expert replied: Internal components can become distorted if the stove gets too hot and this can lead to a shorter life so should be avoided. Do remember to clear the stove out once a month to check that the flue is clear and that all components are working correctly.
