Review of Burley Wakerley stove

Burley Wakerley 12kw

I have to declare an interest as I work for the engineer that designed the stove, selling several different makes of stove, including this one. As a result, I change my 2 stoves regularly, which means I get to try different makes, and compare their performance. I was asked to bench test the Wakerley in my inglenook.

In my opinion, this is a Marmite stove as far as looks are concerned, and I don't particularly like Marmite! (Burley have now introduced convector covers for those who don't like the holes, so perhaps other people agree with me on that too.) However, as far as performance is concerned, it is one of the best I have had.

In 19 years of stove use, I've never had one that used so little fuel and gave out so much heat. It's too hot for the dog... The airwash and turbo inside keep the glass clear of tar, and even if it blacks up a bit after being kept on low for a long time, it burns off quickly when turned up. It stays in overnight beautifully on a bed of ash, and sometimes it is hard to get it cool enough to empty out! We like it because it is so economical and efficient, can take huge logs, and is fantastic to look at when it is burning. Cleaning out is simple - about every month or two I dig out half of the ash, and I wipe the glass down weekly (unlike another stove which I had to scrape off daily) just to keep it sparkling. The double glazing means that if you have over-enthusiastic boys loading it and cracking the inner glass by slamming the door on the end of a misplaced log, you can still use it until you get another piece.

This is one I want to keep for a long time.
