the grate in the bottom lasted 7 years from new but the replacement I got last year was only half as thick and has worn half way through already

Stove expert replied: Try to leave a bed of ash on the grate to protect it and always remove the ash from the ashpan once riddling has taken place. When you riddle only do this until red embers fall through as over riddling will reduce the life time of the grate system.
