Review of The Petworth 6kw

Chesney Petworth multi fuel stove

Diane Urquhart 10 years ago

I purchased this stove at the end of July 2012, the stove only had a couple of months of solid use at the end of 2012 and the start of 2013. By the end of March 2013 I noticed a crack in the rear vermiculite panel and all the panels were crumbling the riddle had stopped turning. The fitter came out and replaced the rear and side panels and I am currently awaiting a new riddle plate they say it was due to excessive heat, this stove did not have a thermostat and there was no mention of a operating range for the stove. I was brought up in a house with a multi fuel stove, in the 15 years that stove was in use only one inner part needed replacing. I have just received a bill for £120 for the repairs to a stove I paid £1,220 for only 10 months ago. They certainly don't make stoves like they used to, well Chesney Stoves certainly don't. This will be my first and last. Two of my neighbours bought cheap imports only weeks after I got mine and theirs are working perfectly and NOT falling to bits .

Stove expert replied: No internal liners will be covered by any manufacturer and providing they protect the metal of the stove do not require replacing even if cracked. Would recommend a stove thermometer so that it will be operated at the optimum temperature. If you have been using smokeless fuel perhaps try an alternative one as they do vary and only riddle the stove until red ember start to fall into the ashpan. Empty straight away. Try to leave a bed of ash to protect the grate and always remove the ash from the ashpan as this helps to prolong the life of the grate.
