Review of Stovax Riva 55 stove

Riva 55 stove

We installed a Riva 55 at considerable expense as a sole heat source for the sitting room in July 2008. I followed the manual faithfully to start with, but despite lots of experimentation and in different weather conditions, this stove simply does not work as advertised and produces very little heat. It is impossible to get the room comfortably warm even after several hours burning (correctly seasoned) logs. Getting the stove alight is very slow and produces lots of smoke, which spills into the room even with minimal material. The airwash control is ineffective and we have to burn the stove on full output continuously. The only way the get a regular flame is to leave the door open for long periods of time (not recommended in the manual) or leave the primary control well open (not recommended either). I am very disappointed with this fire and would not recommend it to anyone - you'd be better off with an old-fashioned open fire. Which we are now considering.

Stove expert replied: it really sounds like a problem with the chimney here, not the stove.
