Review of Dunsley Highlander 5 stove

Dunsley environ 5

Decided to add a comment since found this website very helpful.First time stove user but have used a baxi burnall for years. The Dunsley seemed well built in show rooms and reviews seemed good ( as did several other stoves).Decided to go for multifuel,UK built and not to spend absolute top end prices. The Dunsley is super controlable. No soot on glass to speak of.Simply clean each morning using wood ash.Assuming I have worked out that a glowing red fire with flickering blue flames...looks like a gas fire....equates to max efficiency then it didn't take long to master the controls.I burn at max to get wood to glow and you will start to notice fumes coming off wood.I turn off primary air and play with the secondary air to get interesting swirling effects..intuition and practice....and then you can spot the point where the secondary air can be closed down.At this point the fire box is glowing like an electric fire.Hard wood obviously best but I have been scavenging 4 x 2 pine from a builders skip (loft conversion ).Also get scrap from friendly timber yard...Mdf,ply and pine.Lot of this is off cuts but I have found that building a lattice arrangement works better than logs. I soon have all the pieces glowing red hot and completely clean glass. The stove will not provide the sheer radiant blast of the baxi unless the door is open which is not permitted by Dunsley so I don't try this.I haven't worked out to keep central heating at low back ground level....think you would need thermostatic valves which we don't have.I don't mind a cool house but forgot that kids to day expect warm bedrooms...so they haven't been best pleased with my attempts at economising. You need to be organised and in a routine and have the time to saw up any free timber. This isn't flick a switch heating after all.Minimal mess but do ignore the spotless photos in the brochures!! Opening the room to let out excess heat doesn't work in our house. The stove seems to draw the cool air in at the same time !!Old oak fence post and apple trees burn really well .

Well done Dunsley. How about a removable door handle though..you'll only make the mistake of gragging a hot handle once though. Also ash pan removal is not fiddly on the Dunsley.
