  • Poor fire brick design

    Ian Harvey 7 years ago

I bought this stove in April 2016 and was really impressed with it. It fires out the heat but the fire brick at the back with the 8 holes on it cracked shortly after use. The installer said
it was misuse and Termatech wouldn't cover the £20 cost of a new one. I am now on my third brick and again it has cracked within days. It appears that the middle of the brick isn't supported and when anything touches the back brick it seems to weaken it and the heat cracks it further. Other than that and that you can only use hard wood the stove is great. Pity Termatech don't recognise the fault in the rear fire brick, as all other bricks are fine. Installer also claims the stove has got too hot? difficult to know when is too hot and when it isn't especially when the same seasoned hard wood is being used and that's what they stipulate to use.

Stove expert replied: Depending on how the stove is operated and what flue draw is present a stove can be over fired, stove thermometers are a good investment and will guide you to the optimum temperature that it should be operated at. It is a shame that you have had this same problem since purchasing the stove, you are obviously aware to treat with care after previous failings, perhaps an alternative liner would be worth trying.

  • Very impressed

So far the TT40 has been great, all the heat comes out the front so can be positioned close to walls (the main reason we chose it). Firebox is huge (so we can bank it up with logs to burn overnight
) and the curved glass gives a great view of the flames. It's 5kw but heats our whole 2 bed barn conversion if we leave the doors open. Airwash is better than on our old clearview pioneer IMO – cleans glass from very black to crystal clear in about half an hour when up to temperature. So far, the only downside is that the top air control lever is tricky to adjust as I find it very stiff. It may loosen up over time but at the moment that's a drawback. Good value for an upright, scandivian style stove, too. We paid just under £1000 for ours.

  • Love it!

I spent a lot of time reviewing which stove would look right in our conservatory and produce enough heat to make our conservatory habitable rather than damp. When I visited a local wholesaler
, there were a number of (independent) fitters in the showroom discussing the stoves. One of them had nabbed the 'sale' TT40 for himself as he rated it so highly. I needed 5kw or less and the ability to place close to walls etc. This review is 8 months on and I am absolutely bowled over by this simple, elegant, efficient stove. Plus points: shielding that allows you to have logs close up to the stove (plus other non flammable stuff); enormous firebox for the output of the stove; very simple ash removal (despite what the Termatech website says, there is NO lid for the ash pan, which is not the issue I thought it might be taking the pan through the house as it so infrequent!) The output is astonishing for 5kw - 6C to 26C in less than an hour. The glass remains clear if conditions are correct and clears quickly if not but then changed to improve the burn quality. I have never had to use more than a damp kitchen paper with a touch of ash to clean it (I am slightly obsessed by the glass however) The only downside for me is the left hand opening of the door (which is sprung to close for the German market. apparently) As a right hander I find it tricky to place logs in the firebox with my left hand whilst trying to manage the door with my right. I agree with the previous reviewer who finds the top control stiff, but I never need to use it. Despite these criticisms, I continue to (bore?) recommend this amazing stove to friends and family despite having been impressed with an efficient Woodwarm before, this steals the show. Love it!
