Review of Tiger stove

Not the best but you get what you pay for

I've had a Tiger stove for 4 years now, installed in our medium sized lounge. I burn mostly wood but occasionally coal or other solid fuels. I chose the Tiger mainly on the basis of its looks and price. When I first had it installed it was terrible, it wouldn't burn properly and belched out smoke every time the door was opened, most unsatisfactory. The engineer who installed it had said that he thought a liner would be unnecessary, so I went with his advice at first. We then had a flexible liner fitted to the flue which dramatically improved the performance of the stove, so you need to make sure your chimney has a good draw to use one of these or get it lined. The stove itself is ok, however the door rope seal came off after 2 years, but this was easily and cheaply replaced, and the rear fire brick is cracking badly now so I might replace this next year. Also a hairline crack has appeared where the stovepipe connects to the body of the stove, which I have filled with fire cement (I don't think it would cause a problem just wanted to be sure). The stove burns well and gives off plenty of heat once it's going, you can damp it down easily enough with the air control at the bottom.

Overall I would say it's not a bad stove, BUT - with hindsight I wish I'd spent another £300 or so on a Morso or Charnwood, a stove is at the heart of your home and I don't think you should try to economise on it. I'll probably give the Tiger another few seasons then perhaps see if I can find an excuse and the money to replace it!
