Review of Stovax Stockton 5 stove

Sensitive to controls. Smoke Control Unit design is odd

Martin Wingate 8 years ago

I echo some of the comments on this stove.

It seems very sensitive to controls and wood that is slightly damp.

The Smoke Control Unit is designed to prevent you from fully opening the airwash control which seems strange as this means that you've bought a stove with airwash, only to find it is disabled when you fit the SCU.

My other issue with the SCU is that when you close the airwash control as far as permitted, the stove burns unevenly with the right hand of the firebox side pretty much closed down and the centre and left hand side still allowing the ash on that side of the firebox to gently glow.

The problem I have with this is that the right hand side of my glass will mist up / blacken with the left hand side remaining pretty clear.

Stovax advise this is by design but it seems odd to me to design a SCU that causes the airwash control to unevenly affect the burning of the fuel.

Stove expert replied: The Smoke Control Kit will not allow the air wash to fully close (not open as stated above) this is to ensure that the flue gases remain diluted at all times, it will affect the way the airwash works and as the customer has found may lead to deposits in some areas. These deposits should easily burn off or wipe off providing seasoned dry fuel is being used. If the airwash system is not working correctly it may be that it is not installed correctly and would be worth getting this checked.
