Review of Hunter Herald 14 stove

good decision for us

This is my only experience with a multifuel burner but it's been great for us. We had a double-sided opening which heated the large, tiled (cold) kitchen-diner and lounge. and the heat generated also heated the chimney so that it stored heat all night long and into the next day.

I don't understand those comments about a small firebox as it was massive. I could fit 2ft long logs inside. I did remove the tertiary air stick so I could stack wood higher.

with regards to smoke, I had to learn how to manipulate all the controls to get the right balance.

I felt the ashpan was small. if I burned smokeless fuel, I would have to empty it every day but with wood, I could easily go a week without emptying.

Also, I found burning coal will last through the night but wood never lasted through the night even if I turned down every vent and absolutely heaped up the logs.

As for the clean burn, I've been to lots of friends houses who own Clearviews and Morsos and their windows aren't clean either so unless you clean your windows every day or burn your fires ultra hot(like a self cleaning oven), I think it is inevitable to end up with soot on the windows at some point.

Stove expert replied: It is not good practise to burn a woodburner 24/7, wood will not burn effectively or efficiently if the air controls are shut down and will produce tar residues that can lead to chimney problems, you are better to use smokeless fuel for the overnight hours. Do give the stove short periods of fast burn throughout the day to maintain a clear flue way.
