Little Thurlow a really belter !

It's been up a running for two weeks now. l have been using it to heat my lounge which is approx 5.5 x 4.0 m, which it's doing more than adequately.

Initial l did have problems with the glass smoking up when l shut off the two air supply knobs at the bottom of the stove, but since l have been leaving these slightly open all the time this problem has completely gone away.
The build quality is good(but be warned it is rather heavy, if fitting it yourself). Overall an excellent stove, would definitely buy one again.

Little in Name Only

Swapped a Stovx Riva inset for this more traditional stove and love it. Great stove lights a treat and really kicks out the heat. Kind of (well a little bit) looking forward to some real winter weather to see how it performs for real.

Yorkshire Quality workmanship

As a result of the many favourable reviews on this site I opted to buy a Little Thurlow. Coming from East Yorkshire, Pickering is just up the road so it was a no-brainer to pick it up direct from the factory and get a 10% RRP discount - did I say I came from Yorkshire? :-). On arrival, they seemed like a decent family run outfit, professional yet proud, helpful whilst efficient too. I was left in no doubt that the contents of the box, loaded by forklift into the back of our Berlingo, would be of quality manufacture.

I was not disappointed. Style preferences are one thing, the clean, square, modern lines appealed to my taste yet build quality is another thing completely - it's built to last, of steel and not cast iron.

Having fitted it and learned how to drive it, it works really well and throws lots of heat out. Nice big space for logs, plenty of control available (the operating instructions are excellent)it thrives on big logs and a full load.

It doesn't try to look oldy-worldy , just clean and contemporary with a nod to the past. As a family, we love it. Its' style, performance and ease of use.

Would I buy again? Most definitely. British quality at its best. Good design and efficient performance. Worth the extra few hundred pounds over a cheaper, cast iron model I'm sure.

Stove Expert replied: Good to hear such a positive review of this stove. On satisfied customer!

Little Thurlow 5 years on.

Had this fitted by a local company around 5 years ago now.£900 installed including baffle plate and flue liner. Heats a living room approx 20 feet by 10 feet by 8 feet high in a small cottage. Lights easily, heats up quickly and easily controllable.
Replaced an open fire which puffed smoke out. Eliminated that problem and also the road noise which was an un thought of bonus.
Bought two bags of coal when I got the stove but have most of that left as I always burn wood.It burns very efficiently.
I have it on and switch the gas heating off. Easily controlled if you have well seasoned wood. Plan ahead I have around 3 years worth. It will pay off. Ours sits on a raised hearth proud of the fireplace and I think this maximises the heat. Will stay in overnight if required but we do not do this. Takes 15" logs.Glass stays clean if controlled properly if not glass cleans easily. The only downside has been replacing the costly firebricks. So far once and probably due again. I would recommend it to friends. Although I have just bought a second hand Dowling stove for an extension I have planned.

Great LittleThurlow

After much consideration between a Clearview and a Little Thurlow and also being out first stove, we eventually decided on this Little Thurlow (considerably cheaper). We opted for the design with legs for a bit more height and also can store a few logs underneath. We installed November 2010 and are extremely happy with the fire. The fire is in our living room but due to the heat it generates, the living room door can be left open on occasion and the whole house is aired. This has saved a considerable amount on oil central heating cost. We stock the fire up and leave for up to 5 hours on occasion (closed up) and it always surprises us that it is still glowing when we return. Open up and it is away again. There is no real reason to leave on overnight as it is so quick and easy to relight, particularly when it is still warm from the night before. We find putting a layer of smokeless coal on first does keep the fire in longer when burning logs. The glass does get dirty despite the airwash system and was extremely frustrating to clean but take some wet newspaper, dip in the ash, rub the door and ...... yes it cleans. Having difficulty with the fire cement between fire and flue continually cracking - any solutions?
Can certainly recommend this Little Thurlow but do consider the one with the legs/storage for the reasons above.

Stove Expert Replied: Fair review for a stove and good reasons for the storage options. Disappointing that the glass does not stay clear, do insure dry seasoned wood is being used by getting a moisture meter.

Highly delighted and an excellent investment which will pay dividends

Town and Country were recommended to us by a friend who came across one of their stoves in a hotel near Whitby. She says it is the best she has ever seen. Obviously the Little Thurlow is smaller than the one at the hotel but it certainly performs just as well as the bigger brothers in the family.

We wanted a stove to help heat our bungalow as we have access to unlimited amounts of unwanted fallen timber on our friends large farm estate. Just as everyone says it is very easy to light and control. We have only tried to keep it in overnight once by shutting it down after completely filling it with a variety of logs, larger on the bottom and smaller on top. It did just stay in but the glass was pretty dirty which was only to be expected. It managed to relight when we put a few sticks on despite it being almost out. We will have to get some briquettes in and try with those to see if it will burn a bit longer and retain some more heat, which will be welcome when the weather turns a lot colder as it is forecast to do.

The glass cleans up very easily, especially by using a damp cloth dipped in the old ash, which is something we learned when we stayed in a cottage fitted with a wood burner.

To summarise it is a good looking stove, works well, has a good capacity, is extremely well made and our dogs love it!

One last point to mention and it is something which surprised us, but we managed to buy our stove much, much cheaper from a stockist in Castleford rather than us driving across to Pickering to collect it.

Stove Expert Replied: All round fair review for this model.

You pay for what you get

Again Like others I purchased the Little Thurlow on the reviews made on this site. At close on £900 and a price rise on the way it’s an expensive little box for burning fuel.
Replacing a small multi fuel Villager stove which performed well on smokeless coal but the small size of the fire box meant I was forever filling it up when burning wood.
I wanted a steel stove after experiencing problems with cast stoves cracking, joint's and bolts loosening. Surfing the web for days I finally narrowed it down to 2 stoves that met my priorities. Enter Town & Country Little Thurlow and Clearview Pioneer 400. I looked at a Pioneer at a local stockist and nearly chose it until reading this website and found the Little Thurlow was a good equal, not so expensive and in my opinion better designed and looks.
I found another local stockists selling Town & Country who had the next stove up The Barnsdale lit in their showroom and was very impressed by its simple but very precise controls…totally shutting down to a smoulder in seconds of the controls being shut down and then bursting back into flames when opened up. The Little Thurlow is a very similar stove but smaller and has more control, .a third adjustable air vent running along the back of the stove in the form of a square 1” Stainless Steel pipe with a series of holes which introduce an adjustable air flow to give even more control and set fire to any un-burnt gases.
I only need a wood burner as a secondary form of heating to oil fired central heating but now will be using less oil thanks to installing Little Thurlow. It's a picture to look at with its large glass loading door giving a great view of the flames.
There are some very good stoves on the market; this one suits my needs adequately.
Remember to get the best results from a stove use well seasoned dry timber.

Stove Expert Replied: Good detailed review of a small but good stove.

fantastic

Having my own showroom when purchasing a stove for home we only wanted the best. This little stove is so easy to light and burns really cleanly. We have even managed to keep it in overnight using a bit of smokeless. Having used it myself I would not hesitate to recommend the Little Thurlow to my customers. The flame through the large glass is amazing and the talking point when we have friends round. Who needs the telly? Glass did need a clean after being run slowly overnight, but I think this is the same with all stoves.

Stove Expert Replied: A short period of fast burn in the mornings will normally burn off any residues on the glass from slow burning overnight. Worth a try!!

LITTLE THURLOW WAS BETTER THAN MY CLEARVIEWs AND CHEAPER

I have always been a clearview fan having had them fitted in all of my property's that I rent out and the tenants loved them however, when I tried to order a clearview the last time the price had jumped up quite a lot so I had a look around an phoned a company called town and country I was surprised at the price and the quality of the stoves. I went for a little thurlow to try them out and it was a shock at how clean the glass stayed and the air wash worked. Couldn't believe you could get that much heat from a 5kw stove . I don't think I will be going back to clearview anytime soon.

Stove Expert Replied: Nice review.

Love it!

Had our Little Thurlow installed in January and we love it!
Only problem was one of the top spin wheels fell off, which is why I have rated the build quality at 4. This was due to the fact that it was not screwed on tightly enough, but this was easy to fix once the stove had cooled down.
Good sized firebox, we have had not problem with log size and it is so easy to operate.
We haven't tried burning overnight either so I rated this as 1.
Highly recommended, and it's British made.

Great stove!

Had the Little Thurlow installed 2 years ago and have been delighted with it. It heats a large lounge/diner easily and has a surprisingly large firebox. We get very little deposits in the flue when swept annually (we only use wood) though we dont try to keep it in overnight.

Perhaps the best thing is the visibility of the fire through the large glass, which is unobstructed by metal fixings or central door openings.

Amazing!!

I spent months looking for a new stove. I have previously owned a Clearview stove yet didn't feel they lived up to the hype. Its been over a year since i've had the little thurlow and I am over the moon!!

The glass stays clean, the burning box is large, its incredibly easy to control and most of all compared to all my friends stoves definately has the best flame effect. I think its somethign to do with the 3rd air supply.

Anyway I would HIGHLY recommend this to anyone!

Little stove but a big performer

This cold winter we finally decided to replace the open fire in our cottage with a wood burner. After reading many reviews and online advice, we decided on the Little Thurlow.

For a relatively small unit, it has one of the biggest firebox's in it's class, and the big door and glass provide excellent access, as well as superb visibility and heat transfer. The controls allow you to set the burn anywhere from very slow (have had it still glowing next morning) through to 'blast furnace'. Very easy to light, and get fired up. Easy to clean, Easy to look at, multi-fuel, well designed and very well built. The airlow and turbo burn maximise burn and glass clearing.

I've always thought the the best products are an even balance of great form and optimum function - and this machine fits that bill. We've had it going pretty well non-stop for 2 months now, and are very, very happy with it. If you're looking for a small unit with big performance, this is the one.

Thanks to Town and Country, and thanks to the 'Whatstove' website for all the advice that helped our decision to purchase.

Little cracker

Had the Little Cracker for about 6 weeks now and very pleased with it. Easy to use controls once i explained to my wife what does what etc. It has been on just about permanently since then! I experimented with fuels and found briquettes work best. At night i just put a few fresh 'coals' on and shut the vents off completely. In the morning it looks dead, but open the vents, go and have a cup of tea and its back! Haven't tried this with log.

I do have to clean the glass every day(easy clean) but possibly this is because i don't race the fire.

Little Thurlow with log store

I've recently joined the 'Little Thurlow' fanclub!
Having read all the glowing reviews on this website it was an easy choice.
I am a stove novice, but this stove is so easy to use. Quick to light, loads of room in the firebox, the airwash works really well, and its very responsive to the air controls. I have managed to keep it going (just about) overnight.
It looks great, I'm really pleased with it!

little thurlow

great stove, easy to light, gives off plenty of heat, easily controlled heat output looks great with stainless handles.Firebox is large for a stove of this size thus enabling a decent sized log to be burnt

Brill Lil' Thurlow

Made in Yorkshire out of British Steel, Town and Country once supplied Clearviews in the north of the UK, until Clearview did the dirty on them. The result of this fall-out was that Town and Country began making their own stoves, based on the Clearviews that they were previously selling.
The result is magnificent. A stove which burns as well and operates as well as a Clearview but, in my opinion, is more attractive to look at and more reasonably priced.
I used to be a Clearview snob, but since discovering this stove, my eyes have been opened.
