tiger classic

We have had the tiger classic in now for 2 years.Last winter was fab, I live in a 4 bed house with all doors open it heats my home well. The airwash, may as well not have one, the best way to keep this fire from making the glass back is to keep it full and burn it hot. I do turn it down but every few hours give it a blast on full for a good 30 - 40 mins. We have just got over our 2nd winter and I have worked out the cost of heating my home with gas compared to the cost of using my tiger stove - 1st year it paid for its self 2nd year to keep it lit 24/7 all winter has cost me £400. That's coal and wood, gas would have cost me over £1000 to do this all winter, so it pays to get a stove. I know you can get better stoves that burn well but for the price the tiger stove will keep you happy and maybe a little more work at times but hay a saving of £600 + I'm sure you will keep it clean ;-) If I was to get another I would get the tiger clean burn only £20 or £30 more and now with full airwash on it.

Stove Expert Replied: Coal should not be used on a stove and this maybe why your glass gets black, smokeless fuel only recommended. Also full fast burn should only be 15 - 20 mins as if left longer the stove could get too hot and cause problems with the internal components and can lead to cracking of the casting.

Tiger super clean brilliant

Bought this stove last year and use it as our main source of heating in winter, this stove is fantastic it is easy to light and burns well. Overnight burning can easily be achieved using smokeless fuel. Our chimney is not lined and our chimney sweep says this stove burns much cleaner than our previous one. After a year of continuous use the only thing I have had to do it tighten the door handle up.

Stove Expert Replied: Routine maintenance checks: door seals, glass gaskets, chimney sweeping etc will help to keep the stove working effectively. Let out monthly to check flue way is clear.

Tiger Stove - excellent value for money

I have now had my Tiger for 4 years. We bought it for £199, knowing very little about stoves and it seemed like a good deal. We run it 24 /7 throughout the winter months. Running on smokeless fuel it will keep going for up to 16 hours if shut down and keeps the room nice and warm. Once opened up it gives off great heat and provides good heat throughout the house. We have a good draw on the chimney (which is not lined)and once you are used to controlling the fire with the air vent it can be done to great effect. Air wash is not great unless it has the air vent fully opened, but this is not an issue for me. Back firebrick has cracked and been repaired with fire cement. Overall an excellent stove, especially for the money.

Stove Expert Replied: Replace the firebricks if they do not stay in place or become thin thus not protecting the metal of the stove. Good review.

Tiger Stove - Not the best but overall i love it

Have a Tiger stoves fitted in the open plan living room/kitchen (approx 12 x 24),
Tend to light the fire with smokeless coal and then add wood once fire established. Heat output: takes a while for cast iron to warm up but once going plenty of heat to warm the room and upstairs in doors left open. Build quality: no issues at all. Controllability: The fire has only one air control, if you are gentle with the positioning of this, the fire is very controllable, People need to be aware that the fire will not respond straight away, give it 5 minutes and the fuel will alter its heat output. Air-wash: Hmmmm... not the best. Ok with smokeless coal (of course), but it is vital that the wood is very dry otherwise the window will soot up. Not a major issue though, a quick wipe over with wet newspaper and hey presto clean again
Overall well chuffed, make an excellent focal point, i spend more time watching the flames than i do the telly !

poor quality

Had this tiger stove for 3 years, serviced reg, on replacing the door rope, the bolts that hold the glass in place snapped when I tried to undo them, the door needs replacing at great cost, also the door will not come off the stove, would not recommend this item. I thought it should last longer than 3 years, also the stove bricks are poor quality and expensive to replace, all in all would recommend you buy a good quality stove.

Stove Expert Replied: Spares are always expensive on any stove by comparison to the initial price paid. These stoves are popular due to the price and few poor comments have been recorded on this site. Unfortunate experience I feel.

Not the best but you get what you pay for

I've had a Tiger stove for 4 years now, installed in our medium sized lounge. I burn mostly wood but occasionally coal or other solid fuels. I chose the Tiger mainly on the basis of its looks and price. When I first had it installed it was terrible, it wouldn't burn properly and belched out smoke every time the door was opened, most unsatisfactory. The engineer who installed it had said that he thought a liner would be unnecessary, so I went with his advice at first. We then had a flexible liner fitted to the flue which dramatically improved the performance of the stove, so you need to make sure your chimney has a good draw to use one of these or get it lined. The stove itself is ok, however the door rope seal came off after 2 years, but this was easily and cheaply replaced, and the rear fire brick is cracking badly now so I might replace this next year. Also a hairline crack has appeared where the stovepipe connects to the body of the stove, which I have filled with fire cement (I don't think it would cause a problem just wanted to be sure). The stove burns well and gives off plenty of heat once it's going, you can damp it down easily enough with the air control at the bottom.

Overall I would say it's not a bad stove, BUT - with hindsight I wish I'd spent another £300 or so on a Morso or Charnwood, a stove is at the heart of your home and I don't think you should try to economise on it. I'll probably give the Tiger another few seasons then perhaps see if I can find an excuse and the money to replace it!

Tiger Stove - Brilliant VFM!

Have had the Tiger stove for 3 years now and it is ideal for a medium to large sized room. We have a large Victorian stone-built proerty which was difficult to heat previously. The living room is approx 18ft x 13ft with 10ft high ceiling and the Tiger heats this room well. It also heats the upstairs of the building if we leave the living room door open; it really has transformed the warmth of our house and has reduced heating costs dramatically. The quality of design & construction is good, although do not buy this stove if you are expecting it to stay in overnight whilst burning wood. It is possible to keep it in overnight with wood, but only with hardwood and only with the firebox piled high with fuel. There is no problem keeping it in for 10 hours with smokeless fuel. I have read reviews stating that controllability of this stove is poor. I have not found this to be the case. It is vital that all seals (glass & door) are fitted correctly and that the door is 100% airtight. If this is the case, there is no problem controlling this fire. The airwash works well and the glass stays clean as long as the fire is not burning unseasoned wood and is not operated on 'minimum' for long periods. The door handle can be a little awkward, take care not to touch the bit which is not coiled as it can burn. You get used to this after a very short period of time. I have also read reviews stating that smoke comes out when the door is opened. This does not happen with our stove and I can only assume that people who have experienced this do not have an adequate flue. All in all, for the money, I cannot fault this great little stove.

Tiger Stove

Every time I open the door when it is lit, to feed it more wood or coal (It's heavy on fuel), I get a big puff of smoke in to the room. This will be my second winter with it and if it does'nt get better after replacing all the seals and the glass (twice) and having the chimmney swept extremely throughly, It will go up for sale.

Stove expert says: this sounds like a chimney problem. lining and insulating is a possible cure, certainly a step in the right direction.

Tiger Stove

Had to replace the grate, side bricks & ashpan within 6 months of usage. New parts appear to last longer than the original parts. If you want a medium, basic, easy to use stove then Tiger is the one. Unable to control the fire is a problem. Basically you pay for what you get!!!

bought it last year and not been happy with it at all. First the sealant round the door which had to be repaired. Now the heat bricks have cracked. I have found it to be fairly controllable though.
