Stovax Stockton 7 Inset With Smoke Control Kit

I originally wanted a freestanding stove but couldn't so the Stockton 7 Inset was a compromise but I have to say I am very pleased with it.

It was quite expensive compared to Stovax freestanding stoves hence why I have marked the value for money down. I have also found that the glass blackens very easily even though I am burning below 20% moisture content wood and have the smoke control kit fitted which restricts the closure of the airwash (you can only close it halfway). I have quite strong chimney draw which might be the cause of this.

On the positive side (and there are a lot of positive things about this stove):-

It is really easy to get a fire started.

The controls work well and I can control the burn easily even with the smoke control kit fitted.

The stove is very solid and well constructed.

The smoke control kit is very reasonable compared to some other manufactures.

Heat output appears to be good, even test burns for 30 to 40 minutes were raising the room temperature by two or three degrees. The stove was very well insulated in the recess so this will help with the heat output.

The firebox size is good for an inset stove.

Even though this stove was a compromise I am very pleased with it and would certainly recommend it.
Stove Expert Replied: Insulating an insert stove well will make all the difference to the heat generated. Good review.

STOVAX 7

i could not advise anyone to buy this stove i have had nothing but problems since it was installed 2 years ago. i cannot stop the glass from going brown even with the airwash on full, it dosen't matter what fuel i use i have to clean the glass every morning before lighting the fire. recently the glass cracked for no apparent reason when i got intouch with stovax they never even replied to me. yes the stove gives out good heat and heats the whole house but i wish i had bought something better

Stove expert says: blackening glass is a classic sign of wet fuel or insufficient or too strong chimney draw. If the firebox gets properly hot in a stove then most deposits will tend to burn off the glass. In instances where the glass goes black very quickly I suggest that you look to the fuel, then the chimney and connection to the chimney to try to solve the problem.

Performs OK, but there may be better ones

If you want an insert stove, this one looks lovely, and performs reasonably well if not excellent compared to Morso or Charnwood. My living room is about 3m by 5m, and this stove can provide plenty of heat for this room size provided there is a good filling of fuel, although this can mean a large volume of fuel. It does not seem like 7kw as stated, as heat is a comfortable heat for this room size. Airwash is adequate when on full, although browning in upper right corner is evident. Despite the fact that airwash needs to be on full, it does seem to burn most of the night. When burning smokeless fuels it will burn all night and longer.
Despite its niggling faults, I love this stove for its looks, its build, its fairly cosy, and overall it performs OK. If you are looking for an exceptionally good stove, you're probably better looking for Morso, Charnwood, Aarrow etc.
