Stove Glass Crazing - again.

B.Berry 11 years ago

Stovax Milner Inset Stove.Since the stove was fitted in January this year it has already needed a new tempered glass window due to crazing and `spidering`(long cracks in the glass)when it was replaced I was told to follow the instruction book exactly, which I did. Then a week or so a go,it was chilly enough to need lighting after a few nights and cleaning out the next day I noticed the crazing again in the glass by the bar at the lower half of the glass. This time only burning smokeless fuel. I have to say,it really does warm the lounge well and much better and thoroughly than the open fire it replaced and I don`t need the radiator on either.Has anyone else had this problem, and more to the point I need some help,as its going to get expensive changing the glass every winter!

Stove expert replied: Crazing that gradually creeps over the glass is normally due to the stove not working hard enough and this allows the flue gases that are in the firebox to attack the glass. Operate the stove at a higher temperatures for short periods of fast burn at least twice a day and this should prevent it from getting worse. The damage to the glass is permanent.
