Review of Morso s10-40

Morso S10 - good stove.

Chris G 12 years ago

Have had the Morso s10 installed now for a couple of months and as the outside temperature has begun to drop in recent weeks it has been used every day so feel experienced enough to review.

This is a stunning looking stove, even *morso* with a fire going, seen thru' the big curved glass door.

The handle is easy to use and does not get hot, so no need to use a glove although one did come with the stove. The door swings closed on it's own which I don't know if a safety feature or just the build quality but easily propped open with a piece of kindling when setting the fire.

The flue collar that came with the stove is reversible for 125mm or 150mm flue, my local Hetas engineer recommended to go with the latter larger size.

My installation is without chimney and utilizes a flue made up of 2m of single skin (internal) and 3m of twin wall insulated stainless steel. The stove is stood on a piece of slate from a billiard table and a 9" x 3" air brick is within 2 feet of the stove.

The ashpan is a good fit and certainly does not see ash spilt over the sides, it is also sloped at the rear which aids emptying.

Air control lever is easy to use but is best adjusted with the glove or tapped with a piece of kindling when the stove is hot. I have noticed that it needs slight encouragement to move when either fully closed or fully open but

being fairly pedantic on this point.

The stove is real easy to light, 5 sheets of screwed up newspaper and around 15 pieces of kindling, leave the door ajar against the latch and the gap is perfect for bringing the flue up to temperature. Once going then the firebox

accepts 30mm long logs, normally two, side by side.

The airwash does work but before lighting each day I use a screwed up piece of newspaper to remove any sooting up that is on the glass.

The room I have the stove in is 6m x 3.5m with a high open vaulted ceiling, this room is adjacent to other large open plan rooms and once the stove has been burning for around 90 minutes then the average air temperature is 20.5'C

with the air control fully open. Well that was true until very recently when I installed a fantasia propeller ceiling fan, set it to reverse and on low setting. The stove air vent is now ~60% open and the average air temperature has risen to 23'C. I would recommend fitting a fan if you want to better circulate the air, especially in a larger open plan house.

So would I buy the stove again - yes, is it keeping the gas man at bay - yes, does it look and feel great in our home - yes. Is there anything I don't like about the S10, my installation and setup - no.

I am now looking at another morso, maybe an 04 for the office.

Stove expert replied: Good review although disappointed to hear about the door closing on its own. Perhaps Morso should look into modifying this!!
