Review of Morso s10-40

A great looking stove that performs well

Peter S 11 years ago

We had the Morso S10-40 fitted to reduce heating oil consumption. Installation required double skin flue as we had no chimney - it took a HETAS engineer and assistant about 4 hours to install the stove, chimney and hearth.

Running the stove daily (average 14 hours), in winter, consumes a ‘builders bag’ of seasoned hardwood in just over 3 weeks.

What's Good?

Firstly, the stove looks great and the fire box is a nice height. The glass door gives a lovely view of the fire and, in my opinion, is the best looking stove in that price range. Incidentally, it’s worth shopping around as we were quoted varying prices for the stove – ended up paying £500 less than the highest price online.

Kindling the fire is very easy. Vent works well.

Output easily heats our (60 cubic metres) living room.

Any gripes?

Nothing major really but a few minor points…

The vent control lever is very stiff and tends to need a good tap to move it.

The door is self-closing which can be a pain when cleaning or loading but I do accept that the resulting safety outweighs the inconvenience.

The firebrick cracked after 3 months of modest use though Morso replaced with no quibble at all. Customer service is excellent.

The window needs to be cleaned daily (I use damp kitchen roll dabbed in cold ash from the fire) – it only takes a few minutes.

When cooling, the stove body contracts with the occasional bang – obviously more to do with the laws of physics and not a fault but it is more apparent than other stoves I’ve had in previous homes.

All in all, this stove is well worth the money, looks great and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a contemporary looking stove to heat a room. Our oil consumption is down by about 50% so stove should pay for itself in about 5 years (assuming we can continue to source firewood for free)

Stove expert replied: A good investment and providing the heat to reduce the oil bill, can't be a bad thing in these difficult times.
