Review of Morso Badger stove

Morso Badger

Kevin Irving 12 years ago

Our second Morso Badger stove is on its second year of operation since installation and on the whole is operating ‘nearly’ as well as the older Badger model, which is still in use and problem free.

The two issues I have experienced with the newer model are;

1) modified damper control (under mounted leaver) against the front mounted slider appear to allow air in (from evidence of flame vortexing at air inlet ports) even when in the closed position -a design feature maybe?

2) the door doesn’t seal properly – a larger or second cord back-to-back needed here maybe?

The two issues combined prevent the fire from being shut-down by air starvation, especially so with smokeless fuel loaded and during windy weather when further damper throttling is required to minimize burn rate.

Besides the two grumbles the good points are;

1) easily 12hrs operation when loaded with phurnacite mini bricks

2) Glass air washing works effectively providing well seasoned wood ideally >1-2 years

3) Simple rugged features with large glass window

4) removable door handle making stove safer and tamper proof

5) burns wood, phurnacite and anthracite equally well

Stove expert replied: May be good to try to adjust door to insure seal, liaise with Morso over this. If the stove affected by windy conditions a flue damper or stabilizer may be required to gain more control.
