Review of Loxton 5 stove

Hot!

Having decided we wanted to install a multi-fuel stove in our dining room we asked the builder to open up the recess... which proved to be massive, 5 feet high by 4 feet wide by 1 foot 6 inches deep. Room is 11 feet 6 inches by 15 feet by 9 foot 6 inches high. I guess the recess used to have the kitchen range in it: so we needed a substantial stove, but only wanted a 5kw output. The Loxton 5 fitted the bill, it's a little like a wide screen TV but fits in the space and isn't overwhelmed by it. The extra £120 for the Legs was annoying, but we needed the extra height. First net of logs I bought was too wet and sooted the glass too easily, but I've now found a local supplier who is cheaper and sells well seasoned wood. I'm now familiar with the stove after a fortnight. I can light it with two firelighters, paper plaits & some kindling, and it is properly alight after 15 minutes. Instructions say "latch handle to first position" but that doesn't seem relevant here; it is necessary to leave the door open a crack for about 10 minutes to easily light the stove, then latch fully with full primary air to get logs well established.

We had a sweep to assess the Flue. He said he would certify it (the house is over 100 years old) but we could consider a flue liner; I opted to go for this. It was expensive but I now have a "sealed system" and I think it helps the fire to burn efficiently. Flame picture is hypnotic, and airwash is good. If the glass does soot up a little when lighting the airwash clears it when control lever is moved to full secondary air. Haven't tried it on solid fuel yet, but will come back and give a report when I have. It does everything we want, and really looks stylish. Warning! Handle gets VERY HOT. Supplied mitt is necessary
