Review of Loxton 3 stove
Works like a charm
Was bought to supplement the gas ch in winter. The problem in the living room was the open chimney outlet letting all the cold winter air down the chimney, I had a fire basket installed and that could use a bag of smokeless in a day. After looking online and at the local stove stockists I decided on the Loxton 3 due to its nice clean lines and large viewing window, also the ash pan is a lot larger than the other models I had looked at. I was worried about the size/output of the fire but the calculated heat required for my living room was approx 2.5Kw (1950's 3 bed brick built terrace). This little fire kicks out a tremendous amount of heat when using smokeless coal (the thermostat in the living room was at 25°C when the fire was going, and no I didn't have the ch on). Starting the fire is a breeze; couple of fire lighters, pile of kindling set up like a jenga tower with a wood briquette on top, hey presto roaring fire. The stove has separate primary and secondary controls not the combined control as on the larger models. The air wash works well, once up to temp. Initially after lighting the fire box and window has black soot over it but once the fire is going all the soot gets burnt off leaving a clean window and clean firebox.
I am extremely pleased at how economical the fire is; from using a bag of coal a day (25kg) to using considerably less approx 1/5 of a bag for a full day of heat. Due to its size it can't be left overnight although I have been pleasantly surprised at the glowing embers when I look at the fire in the morning I have tried to get the fire going from these but it took about 30mins much easier to push them to the side and build a new stack. The only problems I have had is trying to control the fire in windy conditions, my chimney has excellent draw in normal conditions (I got the chimney lined at the same time as installing the fire) so when its windy the fire burns really fast, now I don't bother with the fire when its windy and use the ch instead, its not the fires fault. The fire doesn't have a riddle installed so I have to use a poker to clear the ash when burning coal. Overall I am very happy with the build quality, looks and performance of the stove. I am really glad I couldn't fit a larger stove into the opening I had, this stove is plenty big enough.- Be the first to comment
