Review of Jotul F 400 stove

Jotul F 400

Jason Mayo 13 years ago

My wife and I have burned with wood for 17 years and have had a Jotul before. We had this stove less than 2 months of the heating season when the glass face cracked. A log probably fell forward during the night. We absolutely did not force the door closed and crack the glass. I bought a replacement for $156.45. I asked the dealer if Jotul made a cast iron plate to substitute for the glass--they do not. Unless you are using this stove for limited use, don't buy it. I wish we had never considered this stove. It's glass face is unprotected on the inside--a simple interior grill would stop most glass fractures. Perhaps Jotul wants to sell replacement glass. The burn time is OK, but the stove can smoke when you put wood in. Going slowly is the only answer for the smoke issue. Again, if you are a hardcore woodburner, I'd recommend you look at other stoves. This is a poorly designed model.

Stove expert replied: Glass is an item that is not normally covered by any manufacturers warranty, as stated it may have been knocked causing the crack after 2 months use.Regarding the smoke issue, there may be a need for further ventilation in the room, the wood may be wet or other possibilities which should be investigated further with your installer.
