Review of Firefox 5 stove

Firefox 5 Multifuel / woodburner

After 3 years of mainly winter (Oct - March )use, burning wood only, I have been impressed by this small but efficient stove. It is solidly built and shows little sign of wear. The rear internal fire brick cracked in the first year but this has not diminished its efficiency and I haven't replaced it. It generates enough heat to keep all of the house warm (5 bed semi sized) and is easy to maintain. It lights easily if you use the correct amounts of paper and sticks before building the fire with larger wood. Any 'stall' at the start can be remedied by opening the front door a fraction to create a turbo draught effect! That will make it blaze very easily. The airwash system works well, keeping the glass clean once it is up to correct operating temperature (about an hour after lighting). By using the lower air vents and airwash controls at the top you can control the fire's rate of burn in all weather conditions (high winds create a strong draw) and with a variety of wood qualities. Cleaning it out is simple affair, although some ash settles below the ash pan and has to be cleaned out perhaps once a month. A quick annual tough up using a graphite based stove blackener (Amazon sell it) keeps it looking like new. Any residue discolouration on the glass can be easily cleaned with a standard kitchen cleaning spray while the glass is cold. Overall a solid little stove that is a pleasure to live with and does its job of heating the house with the minimum of fuss.
