We bought one of the first Darby's imported in the US--1982 I think--I was told we were getting the eleventh one sold here. It's a handsome stove and a joy to gather around. Our dogs have always been big fans. Burning it good and hot cleans the windows pretty well, and rubbing them with a wad of newspaper before starting up in the morning can be a good idea--seeing the flames burning merrily is one of its charms. With the doors wide it's a small fireplace. It's so massive that it holds heat for hours. Lift the top and roast chestnuts. I have an old Jotul too--great stove but nothing like as much fun as the Darby.

I have had this fire since 1993 its like new. The only thing needed was a new door rope seal. The heat is almost to hot. Very efficient. Every remarks on how wonderful it looks, and they think its older than it is. Shear BRITISH quality BUY ONE you wont regret it.

A serious fire for those who need serious heat.Great in power cuts as you can lift the lid and cook on the top.

Coalbrookdale Darby

The Coalbrookdale Darby was a brilliant purchase which, used in conjunction with an H2 panel, contributes to the central heating when it reaches the required temperature, saving us a fortune on LPG. Each evening I light the fire and open the doors to let the heat fill the room and it has become a focal point for our hotel guests. When the guests go to bed I close the door and the residual heat is then fully transferred to the hot water & heating system. It does get through a fair amount of fuel when burning hot but certainly earns its keep.
It took a long time to set up correctly with the H2 panel (which is another brilliant bit of kit) and AGA, who make it, are a bit disdainful when it comes to spare parts (they take ages to deliver them and they're expensive) but it is an extremely well-built stove and its sheer density of over a quarter of a ton of cast iron retains the heat for hours after the fire has gone out.
Expensive but worth the investment; a bit like having an AGA in your kitchen.
