Charnwood 16b - multifuel

Bought the Charnwood 16b - multiful early January 2012, installed the wood burner a couple of weeks later. When we first started using the woodburner with the logs which I had in the shed, I was told that the reason we were not getting the proper head from the machine was that possibly the timber was slightly moist, so I went and bought some kiln dried logs, yet these logs seamed to smoulder not burn also, as did the so called moist logs, especially when the woodburner gets warm. Also what happens when reloading is a lot of smoke comes out of the front doors, even when I have opened up all the airflow controls. Once reloaded with timber to get flames to take hold of the wood I have to keep the front doors open slightly to get the right amount of air into the machine as the controls on the woodburner does not allowing the right amount of air in to burn the new wood in the woodburne. I am sure this is not the right thing to do as the woodburners doors should be tightly sealed. On the Charnwood 16b the airflow control is on the side on the machine , where most woodburners I have seen have them on the front, this maybe a problem of this stove???

Stove Expert replied: Is the flue lined? Is there an air brick in the room? Get the installer back to check that it has been installed as per the manufacturers instructions. It sounds as if there is a problem with the overall installation, certainly worth checking this out!

A great stove

We bought this boiler stove aiming to heat our 11 radiators in our three bed-roomed high ceiling house. It took a while to set it up, not the stove but the existing piping that had to be changed around. We had gas central heating prior to the stove which was expensive and inefficient and didn't heat the house properly. The boiler stove is great. Having said that, we have had a free source of wood for the past three years. I estimate that if the stove was running all the time during the day, you would use two thirds of a load of wood a week to keep the house warm (£50).
Another point is that we managed to heat the stove up so much that we have broken the retainer grill. This is not covered by the consumables guarantee!
Still really pleased.

Stove Expert Replied: If you have heated the stove to such an extent that you have already broken the retainer grill I would suggest that you get a stove thermometer to insure that you are not overfiring this product. Stoves have an optimum working temperature and if you exceed this you can shorten the life expectancy of the components.

Good Stove

Had this for one season and now moving house. Don't think my chimney is quite up to spec for overnight burning so can't comment on that too much. Easy to light just leave it on full on the thermostat and it about heats the house nicely. I only have 7 Radiators but they are large and there is a long run for the water to travel some of which is in concrete hence drops temperature. Pleased overall. Paint finish a bit poor on the stove body and handles had to refinish it myself. Not what I would expect when buying a premium product at a premium price!
Stove Expert Replied: Are the pipes lagged in the concrete as they should be protected from direct contact and lagging will retain the heat in the system. Was this boiler sized prior to installation as it is really important to get this done to insure that the system requirements can be achieved.

Charnwood 16b multi-fuel boiler stove.

After looking at many stoves we purchase the charnwood 16b multi-fuel stove to run our whole central heating system and water.
We had a real problem then with finding someone to plumb the stove in for us. Everyone would sell you a boiler stove but no-one would commit to fitting it and it took us weeks of telephoning around to find someone reliable to come out. We managed to get some quotes and they ranged from £700 - £2600 for the same job. Most fitters very reluctant to fit boiler stoves.
Overall we are 100% happy with the stove, it is really easy to use. We light it and it takes about 30-45 minutes to get up to temperature and then the pump kicks in and the water tank is full of very hot water and all radiators are hot(we have 8 in our 3 bed semi). Once up to temp we turn it down and it just simmers away all evening keeping the whole house toasty warm.
Our living room is 10.5' x 18.5' x 8.5' I wouldn't recommend having a bigger stove than this in a room this size, it would get far too hot.We found it difficult to find a stove small enough for living room but big enough to heat the whole house.
As the evening goes on, the glass does get smokey but we just clean it in the morning with a bowl of soapy water and jiff, wipes of very easy, dry it with newspaper that we throw in fire ready to burn later.
We haven't used it for overnight burning yet because the whole house is so lovely and warm we think it would be too warm in bedrooms which easy get to 20.5oc even on a slow burn.
Hope this review helps you in your quest to find the stove right for you. Good luck. We are more than happy with our stove.

Stove expert says: try to make sure that yoru supplier can either fit your boiler stove for you or put you in contact with an installeer who they know and who is familiar with boiler stoves.

Really fantastic stove

I needed to replace a Wamsler K97 solid fuel cooker and my preferred option was a stove. I didn't need the cooking ability of the Wamsler. After spending months looking at brochures and visiting stove stockists and doing calculations I finally decided on the Charnwood Country 16B multifuel model. I also saw it in a distant friends home. I have been using it now for a few months and it's a brilliant piece of engineering. That's not exaggerating. It quite easily heats the 29 x 13 x 8.5 feet room and about 10 rads. To keep the rads warm you have to feed it and this can leave the room its in a little warm so we just leave the kitchem door open for a while and that little issue is solved. I only use smokeless fuel as I don't have access to wood. The double glass doors can be a little difficult to keep clean but a piece of damp newspaper does the job. As I'm new to stoves maybe this is me and not the stove. The two side by side ashboxes were a surprise but not a problem. The controls are very good and the size of the brilliant grate ensures overnight burning is never a problem. Overall a brilliant purchase and a very happy owner.

charnwood 16b - multifuel boiler

I would not recommend this stove to anyone.

We bought and installed the stove4 months ago and from the beginning we have had problems. i.e. it overheats the room BUT it does not heat the radiators or heat the water; the paint is coming off the edges; not much concern shown when contacting the manufacturer; no concern whatsoever when contacting the seller in Inverness. All in all a complete and utter waste of £3500 buying and installing this stove.

Stove Expert Says: The 16B does give a relatively high heat output to the room in which it is installed - up to about 7kW to the room when burning wood. This is in contrast to many other boiler stoves which tend to give between 2 and 5kW to the room, even bigger stoves than this one. It sounds like the incorrect stove was specified for the heat load of the room - this person would probably have been better off with another type of stove.
